What is the difference between watt meter and watt hour meter?

Watt Meter

A watt meter measures instantaneous electrical power in a circuit, expressed in watts (W). Power represents the rate of energy transfer at a specific moment. For example, a watt meter can indicate whether a device is drawing 100W or 500W of power at any given time. This tool is essential for real-time monitoring of electrical loads, troubleshooting, and ensuring systems operate within safe power limits.
Watt meters typically use a combination of voltage and current measurements to calculate power (P = V × I) and do not integrate data over time. They are widely used in laboratories, industrial settings, and renewable energy systems to optimize performance .

Watt-Hour Meter

A watt-hour meter, on the other hand, measures total energy consumption over time, expressed in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). Energy is the product of power and time (Energy = Power × Time), making this device critical for billing, energy audits, and long-term usage analysis. For instance, a 1,000W appliance running for 2 hours consumes 2,000Wh (2kWh) of energy, which a watt-hour meter accurately records.
Modern watt-hour meters employ electromechanical mechanisms (e.g., rotating aluminum discs) or solid-state electronics (e.g., current transformers and digital counters) to accumulate energy data. Advanced models even support variable-rate billing by modulating measurement based on time-of-use tariffs, enabling utilities to incentivize off-peak energy consumption .
