What type of energy meter is used in a solar PV system?

The meter type depends on the measurement point. Grid import/export normally requires bidirectional AC measurement, while PV output, site load, PCS or DC-side points may require different AC or DC meter configurations.

What does a bidirectional energy meter measure?

A bidirectional meter records energy flowing in both directions at its installation point, typically using separate import and export registers. The exact register structure and communication data depend on the model.

Is a DC meter required for every battery storage project?

No. Some projects measure on the AC side of the PCS, while others require DC-side visibility. The measurement boundary and project objective should be defined before selecting the meter.

Can an energy meter replace an EMS, BMS or inverter controller?

No. A meter supplies measurement data. Control, optimization and battery management are handled by the relevant inverter, PCS, EMS or BMS components.

What information is required for meter selection?

Confirm the measurement point, AC or DC system, phase, voltage, current, sensing method, energy direction, communication, update rate, target market and required compliance.
